Vitalist Approach to Health and Disease

Vitalism views health and disease as the current state of balance or imbalance within the body’s organization of living intelligence.

A disease state presents when the vitality of the body is lowered by a variety of depleting actions such as lack of sleep, poor nutrition, inadequate movement, chronic stress, overwork, overstimulation, and accumulation of toxins and inflammation.

Empowering the body to heal and restore itself to a state of health involves removing obstructions to the Vital Force through examination of diet, spiritual, physical and emotional health.

What evidenced-based modalities do you use in your work with clients?

My therapeutic approach is eclectic and may draw on any or all of the following modalities: psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavioral, acceptance and commitment, motivational interviewing, exposure and response prevention, mindfulness, somatic and nature therapies.

What is Vitalism?

Vitalist practice recognizes that each human is unique in their genetics, constitution, environment and disease expression. A Vitalist therapeutic approach involves examining the root causes and contributing factors of diseases instead of merely chasing symptoms. Support and guidance are provided around dietary, lifestyle, and herbal strategies with special focus placed on optimizing digestion.

Interventions often include encouraging connection with nature as a way to ground, inspire, invigorate and heal the mind, body and spirit. A variety of practices and modalities may be taught or recommended including: hydrotherapy; use of affirmations and positive psychology; body and energy work; physical exercise; sleep hygiene; meditation and breathwork; psychotherapy; nutrition; flower essences; gem elixirs; interoception; and of course herbs!

Vitalism has a long history with roots in several ancient medical practices including Chinese Medicine; Ayurveda; Greek, Arabic and Roman Medicine; Physiomedicalism; Thomsonianism; German Nature Cure, as well as numerous other ancient and oral traditions. Many words have been used to describe the Vital Force — Life Force, Qi, Prana, Nature, Living Spirit — All refer to the innate wisdom of the body which strives for balance, equilibrium, and a vibrant, energetic expression of life.

What is the healing trajectory for working with herbs? How long will it take for me to feel better?

Herbs work best when taken consistently over a period of several weeks. Unlike pharmaceuticals that instantly alter your physiology or biological processes, herbs work to enhance, support and subtly shift your body’s natural state back into balance. However, holistic therapeutic approaches are powerful and when embraced can instantly and dramatically transform one's overall health and wellbeing.

I recognize that behavior change is hard and addressing deeply rooted patterns of pathology takes time and patience. We will work together to uncover, understand, and alleviate the multifaceted nature of your conditions and concerns.

What types of clients do you work with? (Specialites and Practice Areas)

I work with all clients open to embracing a holistic approach to health and healing. I am especially well suited for clients who are motivated to examine and implement changes to their lifestyle and dietary practices through exploration of more natural herbal, food and nature-based solutions before defaulting to pharmaceuticals.

What does the process look like for a new client?

Fill out the contact form if you’re interested in working together or have additional questions.If you would like, we will first have a free 15 minute phone consultation in order to discuss your goals and determine if we are a good fit for each other.

Initial herbal and nutrition intake consultations are 2 hours long and take place through a secure virtual platform in order to allow for the breadth and depth of my holistic and integrative approach.

During your session we will work together to explore your health concerns from a variety of perspectives in order to truly understand the root causes and all factors at play. I will meet you where you are in your readiness to change and will empower you with all the tools, resources, skills, and herbal preparations necessary to get you started on your healing journey.

Within the week following our session, you will receive an individually tailored wellness plan with recommendations for improving health through nutrition, herbal therapeutics, and behavioral and lifestyle practices. *All herbal, nutritional and flower essence therapeutics are billed separately and mailed to you for a nominal shipping fee or instructions are provided on how to source locally.

I recognize that adopting new dietary and lifestyle practices takes time, and will continue to meet with you for follow up sessions in order to assess progress, pitfalls, and reformulate botanical remedies as needed to get you feeling your best!
